Root canals give your teeth a second chance when they are at risk of being extracted. Decay can affect a tooth’s ability to function root canalproperly. Simple functions like biting and chewing can be impossible with tooth decay. In such cases, extraction is often the only solution. However, it is possible to save your teeth with root canal therapy. Root canals can repair areas that have decayed, preserve teeth and their roots and restore normal tooth functioning. Your Cedar Rapids, IA, dentist at The Dental Center can determine if a root canal would work for you.

What are Root Canals?

Root canals make it possible for patients to preserve their natural teeth when extensive decay that extends to the roots could result in extraction. A root canal procedure is very similar to filling cavities. During the procedure, your Cedar Rapids dentist drills into the tooth and removes infected pulp from the center of the tooth and root. The area is then cleaned, filled in and sealed, which prevents any decay from spreading. The newly restored tooth can be made even stronger by installing a crown over the top of the tooth.

The pulp substance inside a tooth is a soft tissue. It is situated in the center of a tooth and extends down to the tooth’s root. When tooth decay sets in, the pulp can become infected and inflamed and eventually result in the formation of an abscess below the tooth’s root. Tooth extraction used to be the only option for correcting decay that resulted in an abscess. Today, root canals offer an alternative solution that has the advantage of preserving the natural teeth.

Benefits of Root Canals

One of the main benefits of root canals is that you get to keep your natural teeth rather than have them pulled. In addition to preserving the natural teeth, root canals can also restore normal functions, like chewing and biting. Decay weakens teeth, which can affect their ability to bite down or chew. Restoring the decayed area makes the tooth is made stronger and able to function without sensitivity or pain. Restoring normal functioning has the added benefit of protecting surrounding teeth so that they no longer have to compensate for the decayed one.

Root canals give your teeth a second chance by saving them from extraction. The natural teeth are preserved by removing decayed areas and filling them in, allowing the teeth to function properly again. Root canals can be performed right in your Cedar Rapids, IA, dentist’s office. John Vrbicek's 30 Year CDT

John is celebrating his 30 Year Anniversary as a Certified Dental Technician (CDT). John has worked in our in-house laboratory, Studio One Ceramics, for the past 11 years, fabricating crowns and bridges for our patients. This is a special milestone to recognize, as not all dental technicians are certified in this field.

Becoming and maintaining a CDT demonstrates significant mastery of the knowledge and applied skills needed in dental technology. You must obtain 12 hours of continuing education each year after passing an initial written and practical exam.

Over the course of John's career, he has shown leadership serving as President of The Iowa Dental Laboratory Association for several years, as well as serving as a chair member of The Dental Laboratory Technology Advisory Committee at Kirkwood Community College. John attends many educational meetings throughout the year and values the importance of learning new techniques and materials with his industry peers. He will continue to grow his knowledge and abilities as a dental technician, creating beautiful smiles for years to come.

Kyle Gets Accepted into Dental School

We want to acknowledge and congratulate Kyle Haganman for getting accepted into The University of Iowa College of Dentistry! Kyle is the nephew of  Dr. Chris and has worked in our in-house dental laboratory since July of 2015.

Kyle was always interested in health care as a career, growing up with a father as a family physician and an uncle as a dentist. He decided on dentistry after shadowing various dentists, including Chris, during his undergrad at U of I. Kyle played football for the Hawkeyes and graduated in the Spring of 2011 with a degree in Psychology. After applying to dental school, he was not accepted, so he decided to enroll in the dental lab technology program at Kirkwood in order to gain knowledge of the dental field and become a more competitive applicant. After completing the two year program, he accepted a position as a dental technician at our office, while continuing to shadow and volunteer at a local free health care clinic. Kyle will continue to work in the lab until he starts dental school this fall.

Kyle not only values the experience and knowledge he is gaining working at The Dental Center, but also the relationships he has built. Before school starts, he is looking forward to taking time off after his wedding in May to fish and spend quality time with his wife-to-be, friends and family.

Making a Difference in Haiti

Our patient, Dave Soper, makes an annual trip to Haiti to help residents with plumbing needs. Before Dave left on his most recent trip, he asked if we'd contribute toothbrushes and toothpaste. We were so pleased to be able to help and so proud of Dave's efforts. Thanks to Dave for sharing these pictures with us!

Toys for Tots

The Dental Center was represented at this year's December 14 Toys for Tots distribution day by Kim McGinn, Becky Stovie, Melissa Dostal, and Lisa Shannon. It was really a fun, busy day with much joy as parents selected toys for their children. Thank you to these ladies for volunteering in our community!

Brighten Your Smile With GLO!

GLO Science has revolutionized the experience of teeth whitening in our practice. Using patented G.L.O. The mouthpiece warms to the optimal temperature for whitening and creates a closed environment that prevents that whitening oxygens from escaping the tooth surface, allowing them to bombard the stains and make the whitening process more effective, more efficient, and more comfortable.

Available exclusively through dental professionals, GLO Science Professional Teeth Whitening allows our patients to achieve incredible whitening results in our practice in under an hour. Patients can then continue whitening at home with the GLO Science Professional Take Home Kit, which includes the same device that is used in the practice along with professional-strength whitening gel G-Vials that contain a minty fresh, stay put hydrogen peroxide formula that adheres to teeth without getting on gums and other soft tissue. This avoids the problems of sensitivity common with other whitening methods.

Welcome our Newest Assistant Team Member, Sharena

Sharena joined The Dental Center in September as Dr. Shannon Hingst's primary dental assistant. She graduated from the Kirkwood Dental Assisting Program in 2006 and has worked as a dental assistant for 10 years before joining our team. Sharena's first impression of The Dental Center was that everyone is friendly and welcoming. She is glad to be a part of a practice where staff are treated as family.  In her free time, Sharena enjoys bike riding, boating, and traveling.

Updating to Meet the Needs of Our Patients

Dr. Shannon Hingst’s operatory was recently renovated to blend state-of-the-art dental equipment with decidedly spa-like surroundings.   During the planning process, care was taken to incorporate amenities which would improve her patients’ overall experience.
As a sedation dentist, Dr. Hingst treats many patients who are nervous about dental care. It was important to create an atmosphere that was cozier than a typical dental operatory.   Increased privacy, a water feature, a larger screen for patient education, a warming oven for blankets and towelettes, beautiful new cabinetry, sleeker nitrous oxide delivery, room-filling sound system, and an operatory chair with heat and massage are just a few features aimed at relaxation for every patient.   Dr. Shannon, Sharena, Heidi, Melissa, and the rest of the staff are enjoying sharing their homey room with patients and seeing their approving smiles.

Doctor Highlight

Dr. Chris Haganman presented at a local study club meeting held at Morgan & Morio Oral Surgery, where he discussed dental implant placement. The study club consists of specialists, general dentists and technicians that go above and beyond to learn comprehensive dentistry together.

Drs. Haganman, Stovie, and Hingst would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday!

Don’t forget to take advantage of your 2016 dental health benefits and tax-free flexible spending dollars before December 30.  Appointments are filling quickly!

"Coach" Dr. Brad Stovie

It’s an inseparable part of him.  Just like his faith and his family, coaching is in Dr. Brad Stovie’s soul. He has coached youth and high school baseball, basketball, and football since 1989 at Regis and now at Xavier High School.

It typically doesn’t take more than one or two conversations with Dr. Brad until a recent score, a historical moment in sports, or a life lesson from a game comes into play.  Like all good coaches, he can recall with pinpoint accuracy a foul that occurred in the 4th quarter of a big game in 1992.  He can also share with you the heartache of a State championship loss or the unbridled joy of a State championship victory.   However, you soon realize Dr. Brad’s adoration with coaching isn’t about the final score or the championships.  It’s about the ability to make a difference in the life of a young person.  Coach Stovie enjoys hearing from a student who graduated years ago that he had a positive influence on their development or character.

Dr. Brad brings his coaching energy and skills to The Dental Center.  He can recall the slightest detail about his patients…not only stories they share of their personal lives but what procedure he did five years ago that relieved them of pain. He provides compassionate, quality care with a personalized touch. Dr. Stovie decided early in his career as a general dentist that he wanted to offer patients orthodontic care.  Like putting together a winning team, an orthodontic case is treatment that develops over time.  Dr. Stovie enjoys working with patients throughout the case, seeing the changes each month. The transformation of confidence with an improved smile is extremely rewarding.  Dr. Brad has found another way to make a difference that lasts a lifetime.

Continuing Education

AAOMS Dental Implant Conference

Dr. Haganman attended  the annual AAOMS (American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons) Dental Implant Conference with a local oral surgeon, Dr. Nick Morio. The meeting was held at The Sheraton Grand Chicago December 1-3. The conference offers an intensive educational program of innovative techniques and procedures for the entire implant team. We asked Dr. Haganman to outline the importance of attending this meeting with Dr. Morio:

"Our main interest for attending the meeting was to gain better knowledge for our combined treatment for patients who are interested in having all of their teeth out , implants placed, and full arch restorations placed immediately.   The course title was “Full-arch, Immediate-load Fixed Implant Restorations: Team Approach From Work-up to Final Prosthesis.”  Other courses that we completed were:
*Treatment of the Most Common Implant Situations:  Single Molars, Incisors and Posterior 3 Tooth Testorations
*Treatment of the Patient With Failing Dental Restorations: The Drive for Fixed Restorations
*The Digital Solution (which was about CBCT technology and it’s use in treatment planning)
The meeting was a nice refresher course on things I taught 20 years ago.  Additionally, it gave us both insight to some of the complex cases that we are currently treating with new cutting-edge approaches. The trip has given me an even greater appreciation for Nick.  He is a leader in the Midwest, and strives to be the best.  The guy doesn’t stop learning and doesn’t cut corners.  He always has the best interest of the patient as his top priority."
Dr. Haganman and Dr. Morio work together on many complex implant cases every year. Over the past 10 years, they have enjoyed learning together and challenging each others expertise. Many of our patients are refered to Morgan & Morio Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Center in Hiawatha for dental implant placement, as well as other surgical support.

2016 Fall Cancer Update

Members of our hygiene team, Shari, Marie, Amy M, and Nadia attended the 2016 Fall Cancer Care Update for Dental Health Professionals at Mercy Hospital. The purpose of this program was to offer dental health professionals the opportunity to learn about current issues involved in the care of patients who have a diagnosis of cancer. Our hygiene team found this course to be very pertinent to oral cancer diagnosis, referrals, and treatments after oral cancer. This always makes them appreciate the head and neck intraoral and extra-oral cancer exam that they do at each hygiene visit.

New Positions Within

We are excited to announce that Kim and Devin accepted new positions within our office. Kim will be assisting Dr. Haganman. She is excited and eager to expand her career in the dental field, working by Dr. Haganman's side restoring and creating beautiful smiles.
Devin will be our full time orthodontic assistant, assisting Dr. Stovie. Devin has worked as a dental assistant at The Dental Center since March of 2016. She looks forward to the orthodontic treatment process of moving teeth and seeing the end result.

Friendly and Professional...The Dental Center is always looking out for the patient
"Melissa always does a great job! After I told her about a tooth that needed attention, she took pictures so that Dr. Chris could just come in and know exactly what needed to be done. Melissa also recommended a sensitive toothpaste for my sensitive teeth. They really care about you and your teeth, long after you leave their office. Dr. Chris is very conscientious about what's feasible for my family, in regards to my insurance coverage and out of pocket costs. The entire staff is wonderful and I'd recommend The Dental Center over and over again."
