Root canals give your teeth a second chance when they are at risk of being extracted. Decay can affect a tooth’s ability to function properly. Simple functions like biting and chewing can be impossible with tooth decay. In such cases, extraction is often the only solution. However, it is possible to save your teeth with root canal therapy. Root canals can repair areas that have decayed, preserve teeth and their roots and restore normal tooth functioning. Your Cedar Rapids, IA, dentist at The Dental Center can determine if a root canal would work for you.
What are Root Canals?
Root canals make it possible for patients to preserve their natural teeth when extensive decay that extends to the roots could result in extraction. A root canal procedure is very similar to filling cavities. During the procedure, your Cedar Rapids dentist drills into the tooth and removes infected pulp from the center of the tooth and root. The area is then cleaned, filled in and sealed, which prevents any decay from spreading. The newly restored tooth can be made even stronger by installing a crown over the top of the tooth.
The pulp substance inside a tooth is a soft tissue. It is situated in the center of a tooth and extends down to the tooth’s root. When tooth decay sets in, the pulp can become infected and inflamed and eventually result in the formation of an abscess below the tooth’s root. Tooth extraction used to be the only option for correcting decay that resulted in an abscess. Today, root canals offer an alternative solution that has the advantage of preserving the natural teeth.
Benefits of Root Canals
One of the main benefits of root canals is that you get to keep your natural teeth rather than have them pulled. In addition to preserving the natural teeth, root canals can also restore normal functions, like chewing and biting. Decay weakens teeth, which can affect their ability to bite down or chew. Restoring the decayed area makes the tooth is made stronger and able to function without sensitivity or pain. Restoring normal functioning has the added benefit of protecting surrounding teeth so that they no longer have to compensate for the decayed one.
Root canals give your teeth a second chance by saving them from extraction. The natural teeth are preserved by removing decayed areas and filling them in, allowing the teeth to function properly again. Root canals can be performed right in your Cedar Rapids, IA, dentist’s office. John Vrbicek's 30 Year CDT
John is celebrating his 30 Year Anniversary as a Certified Dental Technician (CDT). John has worked in our in-house laboratory, Studio One Ceramics, for the past 11 years, fabricating crowns and bridges for our patients. This is a special milestone to recognize, as not all dental technicians are certified in this field.
Becoming and maintaining a CDT demonstrates significant mastery of the knowledge and applied skills needed in dental technology. You must obtain 12 hours of continuing education each year after passing an initial written and practical exam.
Over the course of John's career, he has shown leadership serving as President of The Iowa Dental Laboratory Association for several years, as well as serving as a chair member of The Dental Laboratory Technology Advisory Committee at Kirkwood Community College. John attends many educational meetings throughout the year and values the importance of learning new techniques and materials with his industry peers. He will continue to grow his knowledge and abilities as a dental technician, creating beautiful smiles for years to come.
Kyle Gets Accepted into Dental School
We want to acknowledge and congratulate Kyle Haganman for getting accepted into The University of Iowa College of Dentistry! Kyle is the nephew of Dr. Chris and has worked in our in-house dental laboratory since July of 2015.
Kyle was always interested in health care as a career, growing up with a father as a family physician and an uncle as a dentist. He decided on dentistry after shadowing various dentists, including Chris, during his undergrad at U of I. Kyle played football for the Hawkeyes and graduated in the Spring of 2011 with a degree in Psychology. After applying to dental school, he was not accepted, so he decided to enroll in the dental lab technology program at Kirkwood in order to gain knowledge of the dental field and become a more competitive applicant. After completing the two year program, he accepted a position as a dental technician at our office, while continuing to shadow and volunteer at a local free health care clinic. Kyle will continue to work in the lab until he starts dental school this fall.
Kyle not only values the experience and knowledge he is gaining working at The Dental Center, but also the relationships he has built. Before school starts, he is looking forward to taking time off after his wedding in May to fish and spend quality time with his wife-to-be, friends and family.
Making a Difference in Haiti
Our patient, Dave Soper, makes an annual trip to Haiti to help residents with plumbing needs. Before Dave left on his most recent trip, he asked if we'd contribute toothbrushes and toothpaste. We were so pleased to be able to help and so proud of Dave's efforts. Thanks to Dave for sharing these pictures with us!
